An Intro to UI

User Interface Frameworks, commonly known as UI Frameworks, are a blessing in disguise. They are a set of tools consisting of pre-built components and guidelines, making the building of software and web applications more efficient. At a glance, UI Frameworks look intimidating, especially since their syntax can be as complex as programming languages like Java. Furthermore, those already acquainted with raw HTML and CSS may not be inclined to learning UI Frameworks, since they share similar functions with CSS and can vary in learning difficulty. However, if given a chance, UI Frameworks can be the best thing that has happened in one’s software development journey.

The Benefits!

There are tons of UI Frameworks in the software development industry, including Bootstrap, Semantic UI, React, and many more. Each framework has its benefits, but generally, they provide consistency and increase responsiveness in an application. While raw HTML and CSS give developers more control over their applications, larger applications can lead to repetitive and time-consuming work, as they require more attention to checking for bugs and maintaining consistency. Therefore, UI Frameworks can be helpful in these cases as well as in more minor ones because they handle the styling guidelines and reduce the need to start from scratch, minimizing the chance of error.

In my experience with UI Frameworks, particularly Bootstrap 5, my HTML programs have become more organized and maintainable. The Bootstrap 5 built-in components, such as Navs, Navbars, Buttons, and Collapse, were extremely beneficial when building web applications for assignments and Workouts of the Day. For instance, I was more productive with my time by actually writing code rather than figuring out what extra classes or styles to implement. Most importantly, these elements took what would have been lines of code in raw CSS and condensed them into a line or two, making customization and adjustments much more convenient. In E35, I rebuilt the Island Snow website with Bootstrap 5, and below is a short snippet of code for some of the elements in the navigation bar:

Issues…

Though Bootstrap is helpful in many ways, there were some problems I ran into while using it. For example, the abbreviations and shorthand used for spacing, padding, and margins were difficult to differentiate both initially and even now. I still get mixed up with py-3, mt-2, mb-1, and so forth. While they look nicer and compact in a line of code, using the wrong one can mess up an application’s spacing entirely, like in my experience with the Banyan In-Class WOD. However, these component notations are not impossible to master. I found that referencing a list of all the components and using Live Preview while programming helped me become more familiar with their functionality. An issue like this can be discouraging for many beginners in UI Frameworks, but the patience to understand these technicalities is what separates good software developers from the rest.

Learn UI Frameworks

Although learning UI Frameworks is challenging and frustrating, it is a beneficial skill to have in the long run, especially for those pursuing software development. Becoming proficient with UI Frameworks means producing consistent, maintainable, and accessible applications, which are essential qualities in creating user-interactive software. It’s still valuable for implementing raw HTML and CSS, but emphasizing UI Frameworks like Bootstrap can make programming much more efficient and allow you to tackle more complex tasks. With the rise of more modernized and elaborate applications, learning a UI Framework could be beneficial due to its advanced tools and sought-after benefits.
